Opus 5 geopolitical freak-out

··
confirmeddeadline: 2026-12-31

Opus 5 release will cause a major ethical and geopolotical freak-out, Anthropic will be forced to temporary block access to it. Heavy users will become acutely aware of the fragility of their situation and their dependency to these companies.

2026-03-26 — Anthropic leaks Mythos/Capybara via CMS misconfiguration

Nearly 3,000 internal documents exposed. Two independent researchers (LayerX Security, University of Cambridge) found the cache. Fortune broke the story.

The model isn't Opus 5. It's a new tier above Opus: Haiku → Sonnet → Opus → Capybara. First model: Mythos. Described internally as "by far the most powerful AI model we've ever developed."

The irony: a company warning about "unprecedented cybersecurity risks" can't secure its own blog drafts.

2026-03-27 — Cybersecurity stocks crash

From a model that hasn't even been released:

  • CrowdStrike -7%, Palo Alto Networks -6%, Zscaler -4.5%
  • Tenable -11%, iShares Cybersecurity ETF (IHAK) -3%
  • Bitcoin tumbles to $66K

Follows the February Claude Cowork reveal that erased ~$285B in market value.

Analyst quote: "We read this as having the potential to become the ultimate hacking tool, and one that can elevate any ordinary hacker into a nation-state adversary."

2026-03-27 — Access blocked, exactly as predicted

No public release. Early access restricted to cyber defense organizations only. Anthropic says Mythos is "very expensive to serve" and they're working to make it "much more efficient before any general release."

Corporate framing: "deliberate rollout." Reality: they're scared.

2026-03-27 — Chinese state hackers already using Claude

Anthropic reports hacking groups linked to the Chinese government attempted to exploit Claude in real-world cyberattacks. A Chinese state-sponsored group ran a coordinated campaign using Claude Code to infiltrate ~30 organizations — tech companies, financial institutions, government agencies.

2026-03-27 — Secret CEO summit at English country manor

Leaked documents reveal a planned private summit for European business leaders at a UK country manor. Dario Amodei attending. Courting European geopolitical alignment before release.

2026-03-28 — Dependency fragility setting in

The market is pricing in the structural risk. Foundation model providers can compete directly with the software layer. Heavy users realizing their workflows depend on whether Anthropic decides to let them have access. Anthropic plays gatekeeper — deciding which organizations qualify, charging more for the privilege.

Prediction said "Opus 5." Reality delivered a tier above Opus that's too dangerous to release, too expensive to serve, and controlled by a company courting governments at private retreats.

2026-05-12 — Mythos becomes a geopolitical weapon

Anthropic restricts Mythos access to a handpicked set of US companies (Amazon, Apple, JPMorganChase) and US government agencies. The EU is shut out entirely. The Commission held four or five meetings with Anthropic. Nothing. OpenAI, in contrast, ships ChatGPT 5.5-Cyber to the EU AI Office through an EU Cyber Action Plan with engineer briefings.

White House is reportedly weighing an executive order requiring government vetting of models before release. Washington opposed Anthropic expanding access.

MEP Stéphanie Yon-Courtin: "Europe cannot claim strategic autonomy if Washington decides which AI models we are allowed to see."

European banks — running on aging software, deeply interconnected — cannot test their defenses against the tool most likely to be used against them. Top US banks already can.

Dependency fragility is no longer a forecast. It's foreign policy. A private company in California, gated by the White House, decides which jurisdictions get to defend themselves.
